Artist statement

I became interested in houseplants as a way to reflect on what it means to care for something slowly and without expectation. My work examines the emotional connections people form with plants, specifically regarding care and attachment. I study plant forms and simplify them into more expressive shapes, while keeping the human figure grounded and realistic. This contrast reflects the tension between control and care. I use bright, saturated backgrounds to shift the scenes into an emotional rather than literal space. The environments are less about physical reality and more about psychological atmosphere.

Houseplants are chosen relationships, which are comforting for some, burdensome for others. For many, tending to plants becomes a quiet form of therapy. My paintings exist between nurture and resistance, examining how acts of care shape connection. As I’ve grown to care for my own plants, I’ve come to see painting in the same way, a slow practice of attention. I spend weeks tending to each piece, allowing it the time and space to grow into itself.
